Living John 15:5 When You Feel Spiritually Empty
Share
"I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." — John 15:5 (ESV)
Have you ever felt spiritually empty?
You still believe in God. You still want to follow Jesus. You may even attend church, serve others, and try to do the right things.
But something feels missing.
Your prayers feel routine. Your Bible reading feels difficult. Your passion feels weaker than it once was. You feel like you're trying to produce spiritual fruit, but you don't have the strength you need.
Many Christians experience seasons like this.
But Jesus offers an important reminder in John 15:5:
The Christian life was never meant to be lived through our own strength.
It was designed to flow from staying connected to Him.
Jesus Is the Source
Jesus says:
"I am the vine; you are the branches..."
In Jesus' time, His listeners would have immediately understood this picture.
A branch cannot survive on its own. It doesn't produce fruit by trying harder. It doesn't grow stronger by working independently.
A branch produces fruit because it is connected to the vine.
The same is true for us.
We cannot manufacture peace, patience, love, joy, or spiritual strength through our own effort alone.
Those things grow when we remain connected to Jesus.
The Danger of Trying to Do Life Alone
One of the easiest mistakes Christians make is trying to follow Jesus without depending on Jesus.
We try to be more patient.
We try to be more loving.
We try to overcome temptation.
We try to serve others.
But eventually we become exhausted because we are relying on our own strength instead of God's.
Jesus doesn't say:
"Try harder and you will produce fruit."
He says:
"Abide in me."
The invitation is not to work harder apart from Him.
The invitation is to stay closer to Him.
What Does It Mean to Abide in Christ?
The word abide means to remain, stay, or continue.
It describes a constant connection.
Abiding in Jesus means creating a life where we regularly turn toward Him.
It means:
- Spending time in God's Word
- Talking with Him through prayer
- Trusting Him with our decisions
- Listening to the Holy Spirit
- Allowing His truth to shape our lives
Following Jesus is not just a Sunday activity.
It is a daily relationship.
Fruit Comes From Connection
Jesus says:
"...whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit..."
Notice the order.
Connection comes before fruit.
A tree doesn't produce fruit by forcing itself to grow apples. It simply stays connected to its source of life.
In the same way, spiritual growth is the result of staying connected to Christ.
When we abide in Him, He produces things in us that we could never create on our own.
The fruit of the Spirit begins to grow:
- Love when it is difficult
- Joy when circumstances are challenging
- Peace when life feels uncertain
- Patience when people test us
- Kindness when others need grace
Recognizing Spiritual Emptiness
Sometimes feeling spiritually empty is actually an invitation from God.
It may be His gentle reminder that we have been trying to live on our own strength.
Ask yourself:
- Have I been relying more on my ability than God's power?
- Have I been too busy to spend time with Jesus?
- Am I trying to produce fruit without staying connected to the vine?
- What distractions are pulling my attention away from Christ?
God does not reveal these things to discourage us.
He reveals them because He wants us closer.
Practical Ways to Stay Connected to Jesus
1. Spend Time in Scripture
God's Word reminds us who He is and shapes the way we see the world.
Even a few intentional minutes each day can transform our perspective.
2. Pray Throughout Your Day
Prayer doesn't only happen in quiet rooms.
Talk to God while driving, working, walking, or facing decisions.
Invite Him into every part of your life.
3. Worship Beyond Sunday
Worship is not just singing songs at church.
It is choosing to honor God with your thoughts, choices, conversations, and actions every day.
4. Remove Things That Disconnect You
Sometimes we don't need to add more—we need to remove distractions that are pulling us away from Jesus.
Make space for what strengthens your relationship with Him.
5. Stay Connected With Other Believers
God designed us for community. Encouragement, accountability, and fellowship help us remain faithful.
Reflection Questions
Take a few moments to reflect:
- Where have I been relying on my own strength instead of Jesus?
- What areas of my life feel spiritually empty right now?
- What is one step I can take this week to grow closer to Christ?
- Am I focused more on producing fruit or staying connected to the Vine?
Remember:
Fruit is not produced by striving harder. It is produced by staying connected longer.
A Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding me that Jesus is my source of life and strength. Forgive me for the times I try to do things in my own power instead of depending on You.
Help me remain connected to Christ each day. Grow spiritual fruit in my life and transform my heart to become more like Jesus.
When I feel empty, remind me that You are the One who fills me.
Help me stay rooted in You.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
The world tells us to become stronger by depending on ourselves.
Jesus gives us a different invitation:
Stay connected to Me.
Because when we remain close to Christ, He provides everything we need to grow, endure, and bear fruit.
