Science and the Bible - Laminin
Have you ever head of a laminin? Do you know what it does? No, it isn't where sheep go to get a good sleep. Laminin is a protein that is part of the extracellular matrix in humans and animals. The extracellular matrix (ECM) lies outside of cells and provides support and attachment for cells inside organs (along with many other functions).
Are you thinking "huh" right about now? I totally understand.
To help me understand it, I look at it as it is the glue that holds our body's cells together and allows them to function properly. One type of congenital muscular dystrophy results from defects in laminin.
So now that we know what it is, let's look at what it looks like.
Look familiar?
IT'S A CROSS!
Doesn't that blow your mind? The same structure that Jesus, our Lord and Saviour, was nailed to so we may be forgiven of our sins. The same structure that removed the veil between us and God so relationship could be restored and we could live eternally with Him.
Colossians 1:15-17 reads:
"The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together."
The last line really sticks out, "In Him all things hold together." Just like laminin, Jesus is our glue. He holds us together, supports us, and binds us together with God forever!
The next time you are looking to talk to someone about Jesus, maybe start with the significance of laminin to our body and how it relates to what Jesus did for us.
