What Do I Have To Do To Be Loved By God?
Share
Many of us struggle to grasp the idea that we can be loved by God. If we have experienced rejection, disapproval, hatred, neglect, betrayal or disappointment in our lives, we often attribute those same feelings towards God. We assume that since other people treated us this way then God does also.
The same can be said when we are caught in a life of sin. Just like Adam and Eve who ran from God and felt shame in the Garden, it is hard to feel and receive God's love in moments where we feel unclean or dirty.
The wonderful thing about God is that He loves us not because of who we are or what we have done, but rather because of who He is. God is love (1 John 4:8). It is His character and nature. It is who He is.
He doesn’t love you less because you missed a church service on Sunday and He doesn’t love you more because you went to church every day this week. The same goes for those who don’t have a relationship with Him. God loves everyone (John 3:16).
There are times when we feel distant from God due to a lack of intimacy and relationship with Him or due to sin in our lives. In these times, we seem to believe that God no longer loves us. Our human nature cannot fully comprehend God’s unconditional love. We think we must “earn” God’s love. But that is not true.
Yes, the things we do either please or disappoint the Lord (He is pleased when we are faithful and angry/disappointed at the sin in our lives). But His love never changes and His love never fails or runs out (Lam. 3:22).
How great is it to know that you are loved by God? He loves you in your pain. He loves you in your struggle. He loves you in your darkest times. He loves you during your proudest moments. His love does not change, because His love is based on who He is. He is love.
