What Does Hosanna Mean?
Share
"The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, 'Hosanna to the Son of David!' 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!' 'Hosanna in the highest heaven!'" - Matthew 21:9
Many of us are familiar with the above Scripture verse, but do we really understand what it is saying?
The Israelites had overcome many harsh rulers in the past - the Assyrians, Babylonians, Philistines, and Egyptians - so when they saw Jesus riding into Jerusalem and heard about His miraculous works and earth-shaking messages, they thought, “Surely, this must be the man to defeat Rome and save us."
Little did they know that Jesus would save them in a different way, a much more meaningful way that will last forever. Jesus would be their eternal Saviour! Not even death on a cross could stop Him.
Hosanna is a cry for salvation and a cry of thanks. We say and sing Hosanna as we are beyond grateful for what Jesus did for all of us. He took everyone's sin upon Himself so we may have eternal life with Him.
Shouting Hosanna is saving "Lord, save us! Please!"
May we cry and shout Hosanna as we look to Jesus, the basis of our salvation.
