Who Does God Say You Are? Finding Your Identity in Christ
Share
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession…” — 1 Peter 2:9
Every day, the world tells you who you are.
Your job can tell you you're valuable because of what you accomplish.
Social media can tell you you're valuable because of how you look, how many people follow you, or how much attention you receive.
Your failures can tell you that you're not good enough.
Your past can tell you that you'll never change.
Other people's opinions can become the voice you listen to most.
But there is another voice.
God's voice.
And what God says about you matters more than what the world says about you.
Your identity isn't something you have to earn.
It's something you discover in Christ.
You Are Chosen
Peter doesn't begin by telling believers what they need to accomplish.
He tells them who they are:
“You are a chosen people.” — 1 Peter 2:9
Think about that.
God didn't choose you because you were perfect. He didn't choose you because you had everything figured out. He didn't choose you because you had never failed.
His grace comes before your performance.
There will always be people who don't choose you.
There will be opportunities you don't get.
There will be moments when you feel overlooked, rejected, or forgotten.
But your worth isn't determined by who chooses you.
God has already called you His own.
You Are a Child of God
John 1:12 says:
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”
You don't have to spend your life trying to prove that you belong.
In Christ, you have a place.
You are not an outsider trying to earn your way into God's family.
You are His child.
That changes how you walk through life.
When you know who your Father is, you don't have to let every opinion define you.
You don't have to chase approval from everyone around you.
You can stand secure in the One whose approval matters most.
You Are Forgiven
Sometimes the hardest person to forgive is yourself.
You remember what you did.
You remember what you said.
You remember the choices you wish you could take back.
And even after asking God for forgiveness, you continue carrying the weight of your past.
But Scripture says:
“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” — Ephesians 1:7
Your worst mistake is not your identity.
Your failure is not your name.
Your past does not have the final word.
Grace does.
If you belong to Christ, you don't have to keep introducing yourself by the person you used to be.
God's forgiveness gives you permission to move forward.
You Are a New Creation
2 Corinthians 5:17 says:
“If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
Following Jesus isn't simply about becoming a slightly better version of yourself.
It's about becoming new.
That doesn't mean you will never struggle again.
It doesn't mean you'll never make mistakes.
It means your past no longer has to control your future.
God is still working in you.
You are still growing.
You are still being transformed.
So don't look at yourself only through the lens of where you've been.
Look at yourself through the lens of what God is doing.
You Were Created With Purpose
Sometimes we ask:
“What am I supposed to do with my life?”
But before asking what God wants you to do, remember what He says about who you are.
Ephesians 2:10 says:
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
You are not an accident.
Your life has purpose.
Your gifts have purpose.
Your experiences can have purpose.
Even the places where you've struggled can become places where God uses you to encourage someone else.
You may not see the whole picture right now.
But you don't need to.
The God who created you already knows what He created you for.
You Belong to Christ
Paul wrote:
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” — Galatians 2:20
That is where our identity ultimately rests.
Not in our career.
Not in our relationship status.
Not in our appearance.
Not in our accomplishments.
Not in our bank account.
Not in our followers.
Not in our failures.
Christ.
The world will constantly try to give you labels.
Successful.
Unsuccessful.
Popular.
Unnoticed.
Strong.
Weak.
Important.
Unimportant.
Enough.
Not enough.
But you don't have to accept every label you're given.
Before the world tells you who you are, go back to Scripture.
Because God has already spoken.
You are chosen.
You are loved.
You are forgiven.
You are a child of God.
You are a new creation.
You were created with purpose.
And you belong to Christ.
So Who Does God Say You Are?
Maybe you've spent too much time listening to voices that were never meant to define you.
Maybe you've allowed your past to speak louder than God's grace.
Maybe you've been measuring your worth by comparison.
Maybe you've been trying to become someone the world will accept while forgetting who God has already called you to be.
Today, stop and ask yourself:
Whose voice am I listening to?
Because the answer will shape how you live.
You don't have to earn your identity.
You don't have to perform for it.
You don't have to find it in other people.
Your identity is found in Christ.
So when the world tells you that you're not enough, remember what God says.
When your past tells you that you can't change, remember what God says.
When comparison tells you that you're falling behind, remember what God says.
When rejection tells you that you're unwanted, remember what God says.
Lift your eyes upward.
The One who created you knows you.
The One who chose you loves you.
The One who saved you has forgiven you.
And the One who called you has a purpose for your life.
Stop letting the world tell you who you are.
Start believing what God says about you.
Faith Beyond Sunday
Your identity in Christ isn't just something you believe on Sunday.
It changes how you walk into Monday.
It changes how you handle rejection.
How you respond to failure.
How you treat yourself.
How you treat others.
How you face uncertainty.
How you use your gifts.
And how you live when nobody is watching.
Know who you are.
Know whose you are.
And live like it.
Keep your eyes Upward.
