Cast Your Cares on Him
Share
Some burdens are easy to carry.
Others become so heavy that we wonder how much longer we can keep going.
A difficult relationship.
Financial pressure.
An uncertain future.
A decision we don't know how to make.
A situation we desperately wish we could change.
Sometimes we tell God about our burdens—but then pick them right back up.
In 1 Peter 5, we are given a beautiful invitation:
"Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you."
God doesn't simply tell us to carry our burdens better.
He invites us to give them to Him.
This doesn't mean we stop caring or stop taking responsibility. It means we recognize that we were never meant to carry everything in our own strength.
God cares about what concerns you.
He cares about what keeps you awake at night.
He cares about what you don't know how to fix.
As you begin this study, ask yourself:
What burden am I still carrying that I need to place into God's hands?
📖 Read the Passage
Read 1 Peter 5:6–11.
Then read it a second time, paying particular attention to:
- Humility
- God's timing
- Anxiety
- God's care
- Being alert
- Standing firm
- God's restoration
Ask yourself:
- What does Peter tell us to do with our anxiety?
- Why can we trust God with our burdens?
- What does Peter say about difficult seasons?
- What promise does God give at the end of the passage?
Pause before continuing.
Understanding the Passage
Humble Yourself Before God
Peter begins by saying:
"Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time."
Humility isn't thinking less of yourself.
It's recognizing that God is God—and we are not.
We don't have to understand everything.
We don't have to control everything.
We don't have to have every answer.
Sometimes humility means admitting:
"God, I can't handle this on my own. I need You."
And that's not weakness.
That's faith.
Reflect
Where are you trying to maintain control instead of trusting God?
Cast All Your Anxiety on Him
Then Peter gives us one of the most comforting invitations in Scripture:
"Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you."
Notice the word all.
Not some.
Not only the things that seem important enough to bring to God.
All.
Your biggest burden.
Your smallest concern.
The thing you've been afraid to talk about.
The situation you don't know how to solve.
God invites you to bring it all to Him.
And Peter gives us the reason:
"Because He cares for you."
We don't cast our burdens on a distant or indifferent God.
We give them to a Father who cares deeply about His children.
Reflect
What is one burden you need to give completely to God today?
Be Alert
Peter then gives an important warning.
"Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."
Casting our cares on God doesn't mean becoming careless.
We still need to remain spiritually alert.
When we're overwhelmed, discouraged, or afraid, we're vulnerable to believing lies:
"God has forgotten me."
"I'm completely alone."
"Nothing will ever change."
"I have to handle this myself."
Peter reminds us to recognize the enemy's lies and stand firmly in our faith.
Reflect
What lie are you most tempted to believe when you're under pressure?
What truth from God's Word can you use to replace it?
Stand Firm in Your Faith
Peter continues:
"Resist him, standing firm in the faith."
Standing firm doesn't mean pretending that everything is okay.
It means refusing to let difficult circumstances determine what you believe about God.
When life shakes us, God's character hasn't changed.
He is still faithful.
He is still good.
He is still present.
And He is still worthy of our trust.
Reflect
What truth about God do you need to hold onto during your current season?
God Will Restore You
Peter ends this passage with hope:
"And the God of all grace... will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast."
What an incredible promise.
The God who asks you to trust Him is also the God who promises to sustain you.
Your difficult season isn't the end of your story.
God is still working.
He is able to restore what has been broken, strengthen what has become weak, and establish what has been shaken.
We may not know when or how God will work.
But we can trust who He is.
Reflect
Where do you need God's restoring strength right now?
Living It Out
God doesn't ask you to carry tomorrow today.
He doesn't ask you to solve every problem before you can have peace.
He asks you to trust Him.
When a burden becomes too heavy, stop and give it back to God.
You may need to do it more than once.
That's okay.
Sometimes faith looks like saying:
"God, I'm giving this to You again because I'm tempted to pick it back up."
Keep surrendering.
Keep trusting.
Keep standing firm.
Your Father cares for you.
Reflect
Spend a few quiet moments with God.
1. What burden am I carrying right now?
2. Why is it difficult for me to release this burden to God?
3. What does this passage teach me about God's character?
4. What would trusting God with this burden look like this week?
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding me that I don't have to carry my burdens alone.
You know every concern, every fear, and every situation that weighs heavily on my heart.
Help me humble myself before You and trust Your wisdom instead of trying to control everything myself.
Today, I choose to cast my cares upon You because I know You care for me.
When I become discouraged, remind me of Your faithfulness.
When I am afraid, remind me of Your presence.
When I feel weak, give me Your strength.
Help me stand firm in my faith and trust You even when I cannot see what You are doing.
Thank You that You are the God of all grace and that You are able to restore, strengthen, and establish me.
I place my burdens in Your hands today.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Weekly Challenge
This week, whenever a burden or anxious thought comes to mind:
Stop.
Pray.
Release it.
Then say:
"God, I give this to You because You care for me."
You can even write your burden on a piece of paper and place it somewhere you'll see it throughout the week as a reminder that you've entrusted it to God.
At the end of each day, write down one way God showed His faithfulness.
